Vintage tool watches, especially divers, can be a lot like denim — they usually look best once they're "broken in." How much wear is too much wear, though? This particular Seiko 6309-7049 is definitely more on the "ripped jeans" end of the spectrum, but this ratted-out look comes with its own character. The 45mm wide stainless steel case has clearly been fully polished, scratched, dented, and possibly polished again, but the edges of the inwardly-sloping "turtle" case remain remarkably sharp. Refining the broad cushion shape of the preceding 6105 series, this case is the first truly great example of Seiko's case geometry wizardry. Despite its broad profile and 48mm lug-to-lug length, the 6309-7049 wears exceptionally well on smaller wrists, including my moderate 6.75-inch wrist. There are a handful of reasons for this, the first and most obvious being the relatively balanced 13mm overall thickness. Much of this already modest figure is taken up by the tall, prominent bezel, leaving the main case with a wide, slim silhouette. More cleverly, though, Seiko also minimizes the watch's actual footprint on the wrist. The case sides slope inwards with a bowl-like flowing curve, meaning that the actual portion of the case touching the wrist is far closer to 40mm. Up top, the unusual bidirectional 60-click bezel (with a heavy enough action to still prevent accidental adjustment) might show the heaviest patina of all. This "ghost" bezel insert has clearly seen its fair share of action, with a missing lume pip at 12 o'clock, innumerable scratches throughout the full dive scale, and a faded, ghostly gray hue.
